To the Editor:
I was reading, with interest, your article in today's issue of Auctionbytes concerning Joe Adamson's tete-a-tete with Pro Stores "ProStores Seller Store Closed Due to Expired-Domain Glitch"...it was well written and outlines a long-standing series of events that ebay has gotten themselves into while making the site harder to use, not easier both for the sellers and the buyers.

When I was an owner of our brick and mortar stores in Atlanta, there was always the temptation to expand too quickly before nailing down the "brand" we were trying to present. I have seen businesses expand beyond their initial presence into multiples only to carry down all due to the fact that they didn't address all the variables.

With ebay's multitude of changes the past two years, they didn't foresee in their crystal ball of metrics the fact that the economy would take a downturn, people wouldn't have as much expendable income and the fact that they would save more because of it. They also have chased away many of the good sellers who took their brand-based customers along with them.

To recapture these sellers, they will have to win back trust...something that is particularly hard to do once you've violated it the first time.

I think this happening with Adamson illustrates the fact that ebay is getting too far away from it's original mission and trying to spread out too quickly instead of concentrating of making it's core product effective for all to use. Need I mention Skype and Pro Stores as good examples of this? They stray from the fact that ebay established itself originally as a venue for auctions and was based on the premise that the playing field should be level for all.

We opened a Pro Store 4 years ago when they were first introduced them (only to close it later), only to find their customer service "wanting"...they tried to recapture our business 3 years ago but I resisted the attempt as it wasn't proven to me that they had improved. What didn't help the situation was the fact that Paypal's Gateway system didn't protect us from fraud as it did on the ebay platform...no Trust & Safety.

Ebay needs to go back to it's grass-roots...the one who "brung them to the dance"...I'm very surprised that another auction site has really not risen out of the ashes to give them more of a run for their money that they have had. Perhaps this feeling of invincibility has spurred on their changes.

Clearly their deletion of the community aspect proves the point that actions speak louder than words in that they think they know what's better for us...don't we get enough of that from our politicians?

They seem to be attempting to recapture the grass roots marketplace through their upcoming "On Location" program as well as other future programs...we'll see.

One thing is clear to me...every time I open up my "My Ebay" page and view the line at the top that reads "we're working to make ebay easier to use"...I see red.

Roll back the clock 3 years then...they turned the system into Frankenstein; now they're going to make it easier to use???...thanks alot!
Carl G.

Yup.  No argument from me except I'd roll everything back more than 3 years.

A good rollback would make help Ebay reclaim its glory in a niche once dominated by them.

Don't get me started on BEST MATCH and how it went haywire again today. I bet it will be the next story for auctionbytes. My A items are in the back of the search results, when I am normally front and top during the entire duration. I'm Top Rated, offer FREE shipping, have above average DSRs and my sales SUCK!

Best match is too glitchy and Ebay continues to toy with it and they are messing up their own numbers.

Down with BEST MATCH and bring back the level playing field.

Finally!

An intellegent ebay critical commentary without childish name calling and simply being negative for sport....

It reminds me of the auctionbytes from many years ago, when there were critical discussions instead of embarrassing vitrol from blogjunkies....

Thanks, Carl! We appreciate your thoughts!

Well said Carl. Nice to see an intelligent, well-written letter.
I am a small-time seller and after many years successfully selling on ebay, and putting up with all the changes thrust upon me in the last few years, it now looks as though I might not be able to continue. Since the introduction of Best Match my sales have fallen. Page views way down; watchers  way down; sales way down. I have 100% feedback rating and my DSRs are 5.0, 5.0, 4.9, 5.0.
How I long for the old ebay; the one I liked being part of; the ebay that I didn't mind sending fees to, as they sent traffic to my items. Sales were good and I took pride in my work.I felt part of ebay. Now I   feel like a stranger, lost in the ebay mess and wondering what to do next.

Have said the same so many times. Every thing they do is more and more complicated everything they do creates more anomalies more glitches more problems.

Every effort to make ebay easier to use, has made it more complicated to use; an extra 'click' or two, more scrolling down, another page to view. I have started listing on Etsy, it is so much less complicated, literally takes half the time to get a listing done.

WOW, great comments. Unfortunately, it's been said many times before but not as intelligently. As for the lack of competing sites, I always felt that the best way to take on eBAY was to have niche auction sites.

The point remains the same. eBay is still making money. He who has the gold makes the rules.

I have been selling on ebay for over 9 years and have never seen ebay have so many issues. To begin with 1-sided feedback was a killer, My feedback is great, but my sales seem to be falling faster than my bank account, due to the new search system. Ebay needs to go back to the basics. Too many bells and whistles that buyers and sellers don't want. GET RIDE OF DONAHOE..I opened my own ecommerce store at www.txdashcovers.com and sell more stuff through it than ebay. Ebay has gone to the dogs

All is well sad, though I would add one thing.

What brought the most trouble to auctions was not the 7 day wait and that people want instant purchases, it was two things: sniping and incremental price increases when Bidding.

We all snipe but lets face it, because of it no one wants to bid until the last day and in the end it's a bum rush and the price doesn't go much up in most cases.

As for the later, what makes eBay different than just about every other auction venue in the world is if you bid a price then the item should immediately jump to the full amount you bid, not just an extra dollar higher than the last bid or starting price.

This would make auctions much more honest and although sniping would still exist it would happen much less.  The seller would also feel they are getting more value out of what they sell and eBay would get more money in commision.

Just my two cents...

Ebay is like most high street auctions in the UK. You leave you max bid with the auctioneer if you are not attending and he bids for you until you win or your max is beaten

When the powers that be achieve their golden dream of Selling paypal and evacuating the wreckage with platinum parachutes, hoepefully whomever sifts through the debris that is left can reconstruct some sembelence of a arational marketplace, meanwhile NOBODY at the head of this beast is going to do a thing that is not going to PUFF up the PAYPAL picture and pacify the platinums

''As for the later, what makes eBay different than just about every other auction venue in the world is if you bid a price then the item should immediately jump to the full amount you bid, not just an extra dollar higher than the last bid or starting price.''

When I am curious but not seriously interested in an item, I bid just slightly over the current bid... I never developed the ''Watch List'' habit.

When I'm more than a little interested, I check on the ending date/time and where I'll be then.  If I can be at my computer, I'll place a small 'tracking bid' and then post a more realistic bid in those last 30 seconds - if the price hasn't surpassed my limit before then.

In looking over the bids on my current items, I'm seeing much the same.  Small, incremental bids placed by unique bidders over the days leading up to the ending time... followed by several bids by only those really interested in buying.

Now... if only eBay could do something about newbies who bid, buy something else, win my item, and then never pay.  Can't leave negative feedback... and even filing a UID has little impact -- they just create a new memberID with a different email address.  Talk about a ''disruptive'' activity!!

ebay wants to offer all the services a business could possibly need through their products and services so they can fleece everywhere on the internet.

No one should never register a domain with the same person who has hosting control. this is a standard for any website and has nothing to do with ebay. You can be locked out and held hostage and those who are the most vulnerable are those who are not familiar with these systems to begin with. the person who got screwed, he doesn't even realize how much money he could of gotten by suing them. Ebay would of rolled over because of the PR nightmare and that people would of stopped using their services.

I remember a time when I could list thousands of items in eBay's original auction format, all starting at a penny, tons of hits and tons of bids.  My mother's analogy was simple, ''it's like gambling''  the bidders get addicted to it, and they like to bid bid bid.  That's before you could see shipping and handling cost on the search page, which made a bidder click on the to learn more, resulting in more hits and more bids.  If eBay could just turn the clock back to right before the time they started posting shipping fees on the search pages, then they'd stand a chance at a come back.  Unfortunately, they screwed the pooch, it's easier to get ranked on google than on eBay.  Needless to say, eBay lost a good seller here, and a buyer.

It really is sad that eBay has made so many changes and has diverted so far away from their core values. As hard as eBay is making for sellers, more and more people will go elsewhere to sell their goods. For as complicated as it is to sell on eBay these days - why not just start a website and spend the money  and money and sell through your own website? eBay is just becoming a price comparison website. Sellers have no say and eBay could care less whether its sellers survive or not. It truly is becoming a sad place to go online.

Sellers are buyers, when they leave so do our sales. I've been selling on ebay since 1998 and when I had more sales I would in turn buy more on ebay. For the life of me I cannot understand why ebay took a auction site that no one could compete with and turn it into this.

Who's business is it anyway? When eBay started they said ''Open your own business on eBay''. Well! eBay runs your business for you. You don't have any control over your eBay business. Back a few years ago eBay was a lot of fun buying and selling. Now?
Just wondering?
